  • Brittney Johnson, M.S., LPC-S, NCC

I am a licensed professional counselor with more than nine years of experience in working with young adults (college students, graduate students, new professionals, etc.) to improve their mental health and emotional wellness. I am passionate about providing effective services for those who have allowed worry or uncertainty to keep them from therapy in the past. I believe in taking a collaborative approach to help clients achieve their goals. But most of all, I believe in creating an environment of patience, kindness, and understanding to help clients feel safe as we get to work in creating change. Chances are, you're already harder on yourself than anyone else could ever be. You deserve to not have to worry about whether someone else is judging you while you focus on taking care of your mental health.

I specialize in working with marginalized/ oppressed populations to treat anxiety, perfectionism, stress, adjustment difficulties, and self-esteem issues.

Approaches

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals accept their thoughts and feelings, rather than trying to eliminate or control them. It emphasizes mindfulness and values-based actions, encouraging people to commit to behaviors aligned with their values, even in the presence of discomfort or difficult emotions. ACT aims to promote psychological flexibility, enabling individuals to lead more meaningful lives by fostering a willingness to experience, rather than avoid, life's challenges.

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach that emphasizes the cultivation of self-compassion and compassion for others as a means to address and alleviate emotional difficulties. CFT helps individuals understand and manage their inner critic, reduce self-criticism and shame, and build a kinder, more nurturing relationship with themselves. It draws from evolutionary psychology to promote mental well-being by fostering self-soothing and compassionate behaviors.

  • Reality Therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on helping individuals take personal responsibility for their actions and choices, emphasizing the importance of here-and-now reality. Therapists using this approach work with clients to explore their current behaviors and choices, encouraging them to make more effective decisions to meet their needs and achieve their goals. Reality Therapy aims to create a practical and accountable approach to improving mental health and relationships.

  • Person-Centered Therapy, a humanistic approach to psychotherapy, centers on creating a non-judgmental, empathetic, and accepting therapeutic environment where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. The therapist's role is to provide unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness to help clients develop self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-actualization. This therapy believes that individuals have the capacity for self-healing and personal growth when provided with the right conditions.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used psychotherapy approach that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It helps individuals identify and challenge negative or irrational thought patterns that contribute to emotional distress and maladaptive behaviors. Through structured interventions and cognitive restructuring, CBT aims to teach clients healthier ways of thinking and coping, ultimately promoting positive behavioral changes and improved mental well-being. It is particularly effective for addressing conditions like anxiety, depression, and various other psychological disorders.

  • Narrative Therapy is a therapeutic approach that views individuals as the authors of their own life stories. It helps clients reframe and reconstruct their personal narratives by exploring the meaning they attach to their experiences. Therapists using this approach encourage clients to externalize problems, separating them from their identity, and collaboratively create new, more empowering stories. Narrative Therapy is often used to help clients gain a fresh perspective on their challenges and develop a greater sense of agency and resilience.

  • Mindfulness-based therapy aims to help individuals become more self-aware, reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, and develop a more accepting and non-reactive relationship with their thoughts and emotions.
